After 13 seasons and 153 games with the Greater Western Sydney Giants, inaugural player Adam Kennedy has announced his retirement from the AFL.

Celebrated for his resilience through adversity, versatility, and commitment, Kennedy leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of the most beloved players in GWS history.

The 32-year-old utility, who could play across all three lines, was an integral part of the Giants' journey since the club's inception in 2012.

Over the years, Kennedy became a fan favourite and a key figure within the club due to his hard-running style, selfless approach, and the deep care he showed for his teammates.

His significant contributions were acknowledged when he was made a Life Member of the club.

Kennedy's career, however, was not without its challenges. He endured two knee reconstructions and a shoulder reconstruction, with his latest setback coming in Round 6 of the 2023 season when he ruptured his ACL for the second time.

This injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season, but the Giants redrafted him in the rookie draft ahead of the 2024 season in hopes of a comeback.

After a lengthy rehabilitation process, Kennedy returned to the field via the VFL in 2024 but was unable to add to his tally of AFL games.

Despite the setbacks, Kennedy's determination and leadership shone through, particularly during the Giants' historic 2019 Grand Final campaign.

GWS Giants Executive General Manager of Football, Jason McCartney, paid tribute to Kennedy's career, emphasising the impact he had both on and off the field.

“Adam should be extremely proud of what he's been able to achieve over the past 13 years, and we congratulate him on a wonderful career,” McCartney said.

“Adam is an inaugural player and a Life Member of the club, and his contribution since the club's inception is to be admired.

We were fortunate enough to watch him grow from a teenager into the man he is today, and we wish Adam all the best for the next chapter in his life.”

Kennedy's departure brings forth the end of an era for GWS, as the club gradually move past it's inaugural heroes, fellow Giant Nick Haynes also exiting the club in recent weeks.
