Richmond's Pick 1 selection Sam Lalor is facing a stint on the sidelines after being assisted from the field in the dying stages of Monday's practice match against West Coast in what is an unwanted injury concern for the Tigers.

A marking contest that saw Lalor collide with Eagles train-on talent Sandy Brock left the teenager grimacing on the ground, with a suspected head/neck concern bringing his morning hitout to an end.

Lalor was able to get to his feet and walk from the field with the help of club medical staff, with the draft dux gaining further treatment on the sidelines.

The Bacchus Marsh junior had been awarded a free kick from the marking contest after a push from Eagles opponent Reuben Ginbey, with Lalor unable to take a set shot that would've given him a chance at a third goal for the game.

The Tigers revealed after the game that Lalor had entered concussion protocols due to the knock.

"Richmond can confirm that first-year midfielder/forward Sam Lalor has entered the concussion protocols," a club update read.

"Lalor will have surgery to aid his recovery, with a timeline of his return to play to be clearer at a later stage. It is still hoped that he will be available for the Round 1 game against Carlton on March 13."

"Lalor will be unavailable for next Wednesday's Charity Shield clash against Collingwood at Ikon Park.

According to SEN's Sam Edmund, Lalor has suffered "more damage" on top of the concussion concern, with a fracture discovered following further assessment of the knock.

Lalor booted the Tigers' opening major of the match in the first term before doubling his tally moments before his injury, while the young Tiger had several more attempts on goal in a promising first showing in the yellow and black.

The ailment for Richmond's prized pick comes as fellow top 10 draft pick Josh Smillie deals with a hamstring concern from earlier in the pre-season.

The Tigers are taking a cautious approach with the Pick 7 selection, while Richmond will already start the coming season without Mykelti Lefau (knee), Judson Clarke (knee), Josh Gibcus (knee), Tylar Young (knee) and Noah Balta (suspension).

Richmond is scheduled to face Collingwood next Wednesday for their second pre-season hitout in preparation for a Round 1 bout with Carlton.
