Port Adelaide's new recruit, Joe Richards, has revealed the doubts he faced about his AFL career at the end of the season before his move to the Power, with comments former coach Craig McRae almost swaying him back to the black & white.

In an interview with Channel 7's Mitch Cleary, Richards admitted, “I got to the end of last year and didn't know where my footy sat and had a few little doubts creep in. But the last 12 months have worked out really well.”

The 24-year-old forward joined Port Adelaide in a complex three-team trade involving Collingwood and Gold Coast in the recent AFL Trade Period. The deal brought Richards, Jack Lukosius, and Rory Atkins to Alberton, while Dan Houston headed to Collingwood, with John Noble moving to the Suns.

Richards had a promising start at Collingwood, impressing fans and the club alike in his nine AFL games and multiple standout VFL performances.

Before his departure, he won the Harry Collier Trophy as Collingwood's best young player, and McRae's praise for his intelligence and potential echoed throughout the club.

During the Magpies' Best & Fairest night, McRae had commented, “Joey Richards; real smart, young player. We're really excited for what he can be in a Collingwood jumper for years to come.”

Reflecting on McRae's words, Richards said, “At that point, I hadn't made a decision yet… it sort of made me lean towards Collingwood a little bit more.”

However, Port Adelaide's long-term interest and a three-year contract swayed Richards, ultimately leading him to request a trade.

Richards, a mature-age recruit, emerged from Wangaratta Magpies in the Ovens & Murray League before being drafted by Collingwood in 2022. The Power saw potential in the small forward, who has since committed to giving his best to the Alberton faithful.

Port Adelaide list manager Jason Cripps welcomed Richards to the club, noting, “Joe is a smart footballer who boasts plenty of speed, has good forward craft, and has plenty of improvement in his game with further opportunities at AFL level.”

For Richards, Port Adelaide represents a new beginning and a fresh opportunity to make his mark in the AFL.
