The former Suns skipper is expected to be available for round one, however, it's not an ideal setback for a club with genuine premierships aspirations this season.
May was drafted to Eddie Betts' Deadlys team on Wednesday night's AFLX draft but will not play in the tournament.
Browne is reporting that St Kilda's Jade Gresham will take his place in the team.
