League reveals whether Shuey decision was right

Luke Shuey's goal after the siren of the second period of extra time in the elimination final against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval last night will go down in West Coast Eagles' football folk law.

The incredible final few seconds capped off what was a remarkable game that saw the scores tied at full-time, before Shuey's post-siren goal handed the Eagles a two-point win and kept them alive in season 2017.

But Shuey's kick for goal came courtesy of a free kick for a high tackle from Port's Jared Polec.

The free kick has divided opinion among commentators and fans alike, but the AFL says it was the right call.

AFL spokesman Patrick Keane confirmed the umpires department made the right decision.

“The view of the umpire’s department is that the free was warranted,” Keane said.

“Both the officiating umpire, Chris Donlon, and the other umpire nearby felt that there was significant high contact for a free-kick and the AFL shares this view.”

West Coast will now face Greater Western Sydney in a semi-final at Spotless Stadium on Saturday night.
