AFL great Leigh Matthews has revealed his favourite AFL era of all time.

Matthews, a four-time premiership player for Hawthorn (1971, 1976, 1978, 1983) and four-time premiership-winning coach for Collingwood (1990) and the Brisbane Lions (2001, 2002, 2003), said he prefers the early 2000's style of play.

“My favourite era was probably the early 2000s," he said on Sportsday.

“I think the last decade, players are still getting better and better, but the general look of the game in the early 2000s I thought mostly was outstanding.”

Despite playing most of his career with Hawthorn in the 70s and 80's and captaining the 1983 premiership side, Matthews believes that that era was overrated.

“What I remember most about the 1970s – the first part of the ‘70s was black and white TV, so that seems a long, long time ago,”he said.

“I won’t be watching the vision because I think the mythical ability of the past generations are much better than the practice so I think we should burn all the vision of it!”
