Brisbane and former Geelong midfield-forward Nakia Cockatoo has decided to call time on his career after suffering injuries over his time in the AFL that have limited his opportunities at senior level.

The Territory-born player made his way through the NTFL ranks playing for Southern Districts Crocs before playing for Northern Territory Thunder in the NEAFL.

Unfortunately for Cockatoo, injuries weren't rare in reaching 49 games across his nine-year career. Cockatoo was picked up at Pick 10 in 2014 for Geelong making his debut in Round 1, 2015.

At the conclusion of the 2020 season, Cockatoo was traded north to the Lions in the hopes that a change in location might help solve the re-occurring injuries that plagued him at the Cattery.

He was delisted from Brisbane at the end of 2022 but was then re-selected through the rookie draft.

Brisbane Lions general manager of Football, Danny Daly spoke to Lions.com.au prior to the club champion dinner on Wednesday night, complimenting Cockatoo on the leader he has been for the players and that despite his challenges should remain proud of himself.

"Nakia is one of the nicest people you could meet in football and has been a much-loved member of our Club that will be missed," Daly said.

"Being a top 10 pick highlights the potential and talent Nakia had as a footballer, but unfortunately for him injuries and his body provided challenges throughout his career.

"However, to play 49 games of AFL football, including some of those being finals, is something he should still be very proud of.

"We wish Nakia and his family all the best with their life after football and thank him for his service to the Brisbane Lions."

Over his career, Cockatoo averaged; 9.1 disposals, 2.3 marks 3.0 tackles per game and kicked a total of 32 goals.
