Brisbane Lions captain Dayne Zorko may have a change of scenery amongst his team when they run out against Port Adelaide in Round 1.

The 32-year old could be poised to move from the midfield down to the backline for the first time in his career, which could be seen as a breath of fresh air according to former Brownlow medallist Gerald Healy.

"I’m hearing there may be a major positional move for a very important player up at Brisbane," Healy said on 3AW's Sportsday.

"Dayne Zorko, I’m hearing, may be producing his wizardry at half back.

"Bit of rebound and a little bit more extra pace."

The retirement of veteran defender Grant Birchall has left a hole in the Lions backline, with Zorko a potential replacement to fill that void.

The five-time best and fairest at the club is known for his exceptional ball use, and his rebound and drive off half-back could be a good move with the Lions still boasting a strong midfield unit with the likes of Lachie Neale, Jarryd Lyons, Jarrod Berry and Hugh McCluggage.

Zorko spoke to RSN's Breakfast Club on Wednesday as to how the team was tracking and how he personally was feeling as the pre-season ramps up.

"I'm probably around three weeks away from being able to run out a full game," Zorko said regarding match simulation at Lions training.

"It's just really good that we have a healthy list besides Eric [Hipwood] and let's hope it can stay that way."

The move down back may affect Supercoach and Fantasy players as Zorko is labelled as a midfielder/forward, so his defender status may cause players to rethink their selection of the veteran Lion.

The potential positional change for Zorko could be a blessing in disguise, as the Lions look to take that next step to winning a premiership after bowing out in straight sets last season.
