Frankston midfielder Mitch Cox is set to join Brisbane's training program this pre-season as a potential Supplemental Selection Period recruit.

The Lions have opened a list spot this year after veteran onballer Cam Ellis-Yolmen was moved to the inactive list after missing the AFL's mandate vaccine deadline on January 21.

The 28-year-old's vaccine hesitancy has given Brisbane list flexibility, now looking toward the Victorian Football League to potentially bolster their squad for the 2022 season.

According to 7 News' Mitch Cleary, Cox is set to venture north in hope of potentially landing a list spot in the AFL under Chris Fagan.

Cox amassed a stellar campaign for Frankston last season, highlighted by a five-goal, 28-disposal effort against the Northern Bullants in Round 10, before backing up that performance three weeks later with a further four goals and 30 touches against Port Melbourne.

The Dolphins star finished third for his side's best and fairest count in 2021, falling narrowly behind Peter Geddes medallist Josh Newman and former Saint Nathan Freeman on the podium.

“Mitch showed AFL attributes and if someone took a punt on him, that wouldn’t be a surprise,’’ Frankston coach Danny Ryan told News Corp last year..

“He’s highly skilled. He can play multiple roles – half forward, wing or go inside if needed - and he has a good understanding of the game and a bit of a killer instinct on finishing too.

“He’s found with fitness that he can get to more contests and hurt opposition more.’’

Cox will firm as a potential squad inclusion for the Lions' upcoming pre-season fixtures, first hosting Adelaide at Metricon Stadium later this month before their AAMI Community Series clash with the Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium on Friday, March 4.

Brisbane will have until March 9 to recruit players via the Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period.
