AFL Draft

Listing the ideal draft prospect for every AFL club

Which player will each club have atop their list come draft night?

The National Draft is almost here, with all 18 AFL clubs now having a strong idea of the prospects on offer and the spots where they may fall.

Every club has their own list needs and voids to fill, some looking toward key position talent while others are hoping to add to their midfield.

The 'best available' avenue is open to every club, but many instead look to find answers to some of their biggest list questions through the draft.

Here we look at the ideal prospect for every club when they enter the draft in what would be a dream scenario for most clubs.

Adelaide

Max Michalanney

Position: Medium Defender
State: South Australia
State League Club: Norwood
Community Club: Glenunga
Date of Birth: 26/02/04
Height: 190cm
Weight: 78kg

Funnily enough, one of the Crows' looming list needs can be accommodated by their father-son prospect in Michalanney, who is one of the leading defensive candidates in the draft.

Needing to add further support to the likes of Jordon Butts and Tom Doedee, Michalanney will be an exceptional addition for Matthew Nicks as he looks to steer the Crows back toward premiership contention.

Expect the Crows to assess midfielders with their later selections, which will change due to the Michalanney bid.

Brisbane

Will Ashcroft

Position: Midfielder
State: Victoria Metro
State League Club: Sandringham Dragons
Community Club: Old Brighton Grammarians
Date of Birth: 06/05/04
Height: 181cm
Weight: 78kg

The Lions have already conceded that their draft plans are pretty much sorted already, with bids for Will Ashcroft, Jaspa Fletcher and potentially Darryl McDowell-White needing to be matched in the National Draft.

That haul is a stellar injection of young talent for Brisbane, who will acquire two of the best 25 players in the draft.

While a key defender might be their next list need, that hole might be filled through the Rookie Draft on Wednesday.

Carlton

Oliver Hollands

Position: Outside Midfielder
State: Victoria Country
State League Club: Murray Bushrangers
Community Club: Wodonga
Date of Birth: 16/01/04
Height: 183cm
Weight: 71kg

The Blues are sure to be weighing up a key backman or outside midfield option with Pick 10, and we've gone with the latter as their ideal avenue.

In doing so, no talent aligns with Carlton's list needs and draft entry than Murray Bushrangers gun Oliver Hollands.

Hollands is a workhorse in midfield and would be an astute selection for the Blues to combine with 2022 recruit Blake Acres on the wings.

Collingwood

Jedd Busslinger

Position: Tall Defender
State: Western Australia
State League Club: East Perth
Community Club: Coolbinia
Date of Birth: 11/03/04
Height: 196cm
Weight: 82kg

In a dream scenario for the Magpies, WA star Jedd Busslinger slides to their first-round selection of Pick 16.

In both of our Mock Drafts for 2022, the Pies have picked up a key defender, however on both occasions, Collingwood acquired Eastern Ranges backman Lewis Hayes.

Should the cards fall their way, Busslinger could be on offer to the Magpies, but it's a long shot.

His addition would fit nicely alongside star backmen Darcy Moore and Brayden Maynard on Collingwood's last line as they look to prove 2022 was no fluke under senior coach Craig McRae.

Essendon

Harry Sheezel

Position: Forward/Midfielder
State: Victoria Metro
State League Club: Sandringham Dragons
Community Club: Ajax
Date of Birth: 13/10/04
Height: 185cm
Weight: 80kg

Had it not been for the ability to match father-son bids, there'd be a good chance Essendon would come away from the draft with Harry Sheezel in a Bomber polo.

However, with Will Ashcroft tied to the Lions, and the Giants and Roos needing to look elsewhere, Essendon are likely to end up out of reach of the Ajax product.

Needing to bolster their small forward stocks, none come more fitting that Sheezel, who would surely bring the 'mosquito fleet' theme back to Tullamarine.

Fremantle

Isaac Keeler

Position: Forward/Ruck
State: South Australia
State League Club: North Adelaide
Community Club: South Augusta
Date of Birth: 23/04/04
Height: 198cm
Weight: 89kg

The Dockers have identified height and key-position talent as an area of focus for their draft plans, looking to strengthen their spine, and more specifically ruck stocks after losing fringe tall Lloyd Meek.

Keeler is an option that can not only support Justin Longmuir's twin talls Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson, but can work as insurance for the likes of Jye Amiss, Matt Taberner and Jackson should one of the key-forward trio go down with injury.

Keeler's chances of sliding to Pick 30 are thin, but you can't rule it out.

Geelong

Elijah Tsatas

Position: Midfielder
State: Victoria Metro
State League Club: Oakleigh Chargers
Community Club: Surrey Park
Date of Birth: 18/10/04
Height: 186cm
Weight: 79kg

As Geelong look to shape their new-look midfield, Oakleigh Chargers star Elijah Tsatas seems like the fitting option for the Cats to build around.

A versatile onballer who can offer elite ball-winning services inside and out, Tsatas would be the new key piece for the Cats as they too look to add insurance for the coming years.

While unlikely to be on offer when the Cats enter the draft, there's still no ruling out the scenario that sees Tsatas head down the highway.

Gold Coast

Jedd Busslinger

Position: Tall Defender
State: Western Australia
State League Club: East Perth
Community Club: Coolbinia
Date of Birth: 11/03/04
Height: 196cm
Weight: 82kg

It seems the Suns are more likely to look toward the 'best available prospect' when they use Pick 5 in the draft, but an obvious list need for the Queensland club is a key defender.

None come better than Busslinger, who should be available to the Suns when they come on the clock.

The addition of Busslinger would see Sam Collins find a formidable partner in defence, an addition that has been a long time coming for Gold Coast.

GWS

Aaron Cadman

Position: Key Forward
State: Victoria Country
State League Club: GWV Rebels
Community Club: Darley
Date of Birth: 03/03/04
Height: 195cm
Weight: 91kg

The Giants' thirst for Cadman was evident when they moved to the top of the draft order in a four-way trade that saw them part with Picks 3 and 12.

They now sit in the driver's seat and are tipped to add the Jeremy Cameron clone who will hopefully be their longest-serving star forward.

Cadman might immediately slot into Adam Kinglsey's forward formation alongside Jesse Hogan and Jake Riccardi as GWS re-enter a period of list building.

Hawthorn

Elijah Tsatas

Position: Midfielder
State: Victoria Metro
State League Club: Oakleigh Chargers
Community Club: Surrey Park
Date of Birth: 18/10/04
Height: 186cm
Weight: 79kg

Like the Cats, who we've also listed Tsatas for, the Hawks are set to place their attention to new faces in midfield.

While Jai Newcombe will lead the charge, with 2021 top pick Josh Ward his deputy, Tsatas will seamlessly complement the young midfield pair and form a lethal three-piece for Sam Mitchell's engine room.

The Hawks will be hoping the Bombers and Suns pass on Tsatas, with the Surrey Park sensation surely not getting past the Hawks on draft night.

Melbourne

Mattaes Phillipou

Position: Midfielder/Forward
State: South Australia
State League Club: Woodville-West Torrens
Community Club: PHOS Camden
Date of Birth: 27/12/04
Height: 190cm
Weight: 89kg

It now seems unlikely Phillipou will be on the table for the Demons to claim when they enter the draft at Pick 13.

Phillipou's stocks have significantly risen in recent weeks, with the South Australian now seen as a strong chance to land in opening five picks.

That's not to say Melbourne are no chance, with the Demons having looked to move into the opening few spots in the queue with their first-round pick and future selections on offer.

It's a strategy that's paid off for the Demons in recent years, having traded up to secure Clayton Oliver in 2015 and Kysaiah Pickett in 2019.

North Melbourne

George Wardlaw

Position: Midfielder
State: Victoria Metro
State League Club: Oakleigh Chargers
Community Club: St Peter's
Date of Birth 18/07/04
Height: 182cm
Weight: 80kg

Another selection that looks likely to transpire on draft night, with Wardlaw set to join Alastair Clarkson's new-look North Melbourne at either Pick 2 or 3 for the Roos.

The addition of Wardlaw sees the Kangaroos immediately plug the hole left by Jason Horne-Francis, with the St Peter's star a contested ball-winning beast and arguably the best midfielder in his class.

Wardlaw, along with whoever else the Roos pick up early into the draft, is sure to buoy the new Clarkson era at Arden Street.

Port Adelaide

Lewis Hayes

Position: Tall Defender
State: Victoria Metro
State League Club: Eastern Ranges
Community Club: South Belgrave
Date of Birth: 17/12/04
Height: 199cm
Weight: 82kg

It'd take some luck for Hayes to slide all the way to Pick 33 for Port Adelaide, with the Easter Ranges prospect a chance to land among the final five or so selections in the first round.

The Power have flagged their desire to add height to their defence, and with Hayes will be getting a promising near-two-metre tall prospect who can intercept and do damage with ball in hand.

Oakleigh Chargers high-flyer Josh Weddle will be another defensive option for the Power to consider when they first come on the clock.

Richmond

Harry Lemmey

Position: Key Forward
State: South Australia
State League Club: West Adelaide
Community Club: Flagstaff Hill
Date of Birth: 30/01/04
Height: 200cm
Weight: 95kg

With the Tigers not entering the draft until Pick 53 we take a bit of a different look at the class of 2022.

While a Cadman or Matthew Jefferson would be perfect for Punt Road, a more realistic key-forward selection for Richmond is South Australia's Harry Lemmey.

Lemmey is a formidable key forward who could learn a lot from Jack Riewoldt in 2023 before the Tigers champion passes on the baton.

St Kilda

Mattaes Phillipou

Position: Midfielder/Forward
State: South Australia
State League Club: Woodville-West Torrens
Community Club: PHOS Camden
Date of Birth: 27/12/04
Height: 190cm
Weight: 89kg

The Saints need some spark, and no talent in 2022 is going to give them more of an edge and attitude boost than Phillipou.

The midfield/forward hybrid is brimming with confidence and wants to play on the biggest of stages, a destination Saints fans are wishing to return to.

His ability to hunt the ball in midfield and mount plenty of points on the scoreboard would work well in the Saints' system, which is now led by ex-coach Ross Lyon.

Sydney

Matt Jefferson

Position: Key Forward
State: Victoria Metro
State League Club: Oakleigh Chargers
Community Club: Ashburton
Date of Birth: 08/03/04
Height: 195cm
Weight: 84kg

While the Swans' list is tipped to contend for the premiership for the next several seasons following their grand final finish this year, there is an area or two where they need to place some attention toward in this draft.

A key forward to replace Lance Franklin and work alongside Logan McDonald is a must, and Jefferson could be that man.

The Oakleigh forward is arguably the second-best key-forward prospect in the draft and remains a good chance to be available to the Swans when they enter the draft with their two first-round picks.

West Coast

Ed Allan

Position: Utility
State: Western Australia
State League Club: Claremont
Community Club: Mosman Park
Date of Birth: 26/05/04
Height: 194cm
Weight: 83kg

Looking away from the 'best player available' option the Eagles are set to consider, local prospect Ed Allan is a player that can fill a number of roles for Adam Simpson as West Coast look to plan how their squad takes shape for the future.

The Eagles are set to add to their engine room, while a ruck is sure to be on their wish list, however what Allan can offer is flexibility, playing on the wing to help the midfield or move forward as an attacking target while the likes of Oscar Allen or Bailey Williams move into the middle to help with the ruck workload.

Allan is more likely to be a pickup for the Eagles with their second selection at Pick 12.

Western Bulldogs

Jedd Busslinger

Position: Tall Defender
State: Western Australia
State League Club: East Perth
Community Club: Coolbinia
Date of Birth: 11/03/04
Height: 196cm
Weight: 82kg

Yet again, Busslinger shows up on our list given the wide demand for ley defensive options and the WA young gun's chances of sliding anywhere between Pick 6 and the second half of the first round.

The Bulldogs will rely on senior talent in Liam Jones and Alex Keath to lead the charge for the next 24 months, but plans for their succession need to be in place.

Sam Darcy looms likely to build his career in the backline, with Busslinger and the father-son Dog a worrying partnership for opposition forwards.

Currently entering the draft at Pick 11, Busslinger's availability to the Bulldogs isn't out of the question.
