Former Essendon great Matthew Lloyd believes that Charlie Curnow could be the AFL’s best player.

The 22-year-old is coming off a career best season that saw him kick 34 goals in 20 games and he will be looking to continue that form after his strong pre-season.

Lloyd believes that the young talent surrounding Curnow can help get the best out of the key forward.

“I’d say the hype around their top-end talent should be right because I think Charlie (Curnow) could be the best player in the game,” Lloyd told 3AW’s Sportsday.

“He reminds me a bit of (Anthony) Koutoufides in terms of the excitement he can bring to football.”

Despite his high hopes for Curnow, Lloyd was still low on Carlton as a team.

“I’m still thinking they’ll be bottom two or three,” he said.

“For Brendon Bolton’s sake, they can’t be 0-6. It has to be at least 2-4 to see some sort of improvement otherwise he’ll be under pressure.”
