Melbourne champion Garry Lyon believes the Demons should make a play for Gold Coast Suns co-captain Steven May as the continue to struggle shutting down opposition key forwards.

North Melbourne young gun Ben Brown was the latest forward to get on top of the Melbourne backline, as Brown booted an influential five goals in the Roos' 14-point win.

Brown is the fifth forward in nine games to kick a bag of four against Melbourne, with Nick Riewoldt, Tom Hawkins, Jack Riewoldt and Jarryd Roughead all achieving the feat against the Demons in 2017.

Their poor defensive record against the opposition's best forward prompted Lyon to make the call, suggesting the 25-year-old would bring some much-needed stability to the Demons' back six.

โ€œIโ€™d ring my old mate Todd Viney โ€” who is in the list management team โ€” and tell him (to go) all guns blazing for Steven May,โ€ Lyon told SEN Breakfast on Monday morning.

โ€œWe know that heโ€™s out of contract. They just need a big key defender.

โ€œOscar McDonald keeps getting exposed โ€” heโ€™s not the match-up for Ben brown.

โ€œTom McDonald really struggled and Sam Frost is going to be okay, but heโ€™s more of your running, rebounding 6ft 5in defender.

โ€œAll guns blazing for Steven May. Make the big play โ€” lock him in.โ€

May is out of contract at season's end, and has played 94 games for the Suns since joining their list as an inaugural player.
