The 2023 AFLW season will begin on Friday night with a clash between the Melbourne Demons and Collingwood Magpies and will also have the Sydney, Western Australia and South Australia rivalries on show.

The Dockers will have many notable absences when they take on the Eagles in the annual Western Australia derby. The players who have not been selected for the team are Serena Gibbs, Nikkie Nield, Roxy Roux and Phil Seth; the last two are missing due to injuries. While these four players will miss out on the opener, Joanna Craig and Tahleah Mulder have been called upon to make their club debuts.

Taking on the Dockers, the West Coast Eagles will have four new faces in their lineup making their debut, including the Wakfer sisters. Emily Elkington, Amy Franklin, Lauren Wakfer, and Zoe Wakfer are the players being awarded their club debut. Despite four new faces, they will be without notable absentees Beth Schilling (wrist injury) and Aimee Schmidt.
