GWS Giants interim coach Mark McVeigh has dismissed suggestions that a mass exodus of players is on the cards, calling the reports "speculation".

While names such as Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper have been floated as potential departures from the club, McVeigh insisted he wasn't worried about what the future held at GWS.

"It doesn't matter to me. What matters to me is we're open and honest with each other," McVeigh said to media on Friday.

"I've obviously shared my intentions of what I'd like to do, but it's something that at times can be out of your control.

"I'd like to think that we can implement a good footy program ... and make sure everyone is enjoying ourselves and can see us going in the right direction.

"It (the rumours of players leaving) is speculation. I'm here to coach the team, I'm not here to shape the list for the next few years."

McVeigh has thrown his hat in the ring for the senior coaching gig come next season, but has reminded his players to keep playing for their spots despite finals no longer being on the agenda in 2022.

"In the end, whoever ends up coaching our club is watching who they want," McVeigh said.

"I think that's really important, our players need to be reminded of that."

Giant Tom Green was a noticeable admission on the team sheet for this weekend, rested after playing all 17 games so far this season. Averaging 25.1 disposals and 5.6 clearances, the midfielder has struggled with form in recent weeks, with McVeigh admitting that the 21-year-old needed to spend some time on the sidelines.

"I want energy towards the end of the season, we need effort. I felt that was slowly declining, not through choice, but just the constant battering of a young kid," McVeigh said.

"I've chosen to freshen him up, make sure he's feeling good, give him a few days away from the club."

The Giants will travel to Melbourne to take on Carlton at Marvel Stadium on Sunday at 1:10pm AEST.
