Melbourne have unveiled Andrew McQualter as their latest coaching addition following his departure from Richmond.

The Tigers confirmed McQualter's exit on Tuesday after a decade at Punt Road, which ended with a 13-game stint as caretaker coach.

McQualter stepped into the interim role in May following the resignation of triple premiership coach Damien Hardwick and would lead the Tigers to seven wins during his time in charge.

Richmond would soon undergo a process to appoint Hardwick's full-time successor, with McQualter among the candidates in the running until the end.

The race was won by Melbourne assistant Adem Yze, who was appointed midway through last month, leaving McQualter with a decision to make on his coaching future.

Hours after the Tigers confirmed McQualter's exit, Melbourne revealed the 37-year-old has joined their coaching team under Simon Goodwin for the 2024 season.

“We are thrilled to have Andrew join the club in an assistant coaching capacity,” Melbourne performance boss Alan Richardson said in a club statement.

"Andrew's coaching experience over the past decade speaks for itself. From being part of three premierships, to his recent tenure as interim coach; we have no doubt his exposure to various roles and responsibilities will be a great asset to the club.

“We look forward to welcoming Andrew as we turn our attention to the 2024 season.”

McQualter brings with him ten years of coaching experience at the VFL, development and assistant levels, along with his 94 games of AFL experience with St Kilda and Gold Coast.

He becomes the Demons' first coaching addition of the off-season, while Yze was the first assistant to leave Melbourne this year via his move to Tigerland.
