The Melbourne Football Club is reportedly in discussions to bring back former club captain Nathan Jones in a coaching capacity for 2025.
Jones, a decorated veteran with 302 games, three best and fairest titles, and a reputation for his resilience, could fill the void left by Andrew McQualter's departure to West Coast as their new senior coach.
Channel 9's chief reporter Tom Morris broke the news, noting that while Jones is keen to explore the role, he hasn't yet committed.
Jones's return would be his first official engagement with the club since he retired in 2021, following Melbourne's premiership run. Lauded for his leadership through challenging periods, Jones was central to the Demons' journey from bottom of the ladder to eventual premiers, captaining the side from 2014 to 2019.
In recent commentary, Jones has not shied away from critiquing Melbourne's handling of internal affairs, especially amid tensions involving star players Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver. This vocal stance indicates a level commitment to the club's success and to supporting players who share that vision.
If the deal is sealed, Jones will add significant experience and insight to Melbourne's coaching ranks, likely overseeing the Demons' midfield and mentoring emerging players like Caleb Windsor, Trent Rivers, Tom Sparrow and the like.
Melbourne will confirm further coaching arrangements as the 2025 season approaches and the ongoing trade period closes.
