Melbourne provide latest on hurt defender Steven May

Melbourne will await scan results for defender Steven May's latest rib injury after the premiership Demon was subbed out of Friday's defeat to the Western Bulldogs.

A collision with Dogs youngster Laitham Vandermeer in the second term is believed to be what caused May some discomfort before he was assessed off the field for internal injury.

The Demons ruled May out for the second half of the game with concerns of a rib injury - a similar ailment he sustained in Round 2 against Hawthorn in a marking contest.

May missed just one game after scans showed two fractured ribs, with the veteran backman taken to hospital again on Friday night following the Dogs game.

Demons coach Simon Goodwin said the club has its "fingers crossed" May faces a short turnaround, with Melbourne awaiting scans.

"He's got some (hurt) ribs. We'll get them looked at," the Demons coach said after the 51-point loss.

"We'll get him assessed and look at where that sits. He'll go away and get precautionary scans, check everything, make sure everything is right for Steven.

"We won't take a risk. Obviously he had that rib injury earlier in the year and he managed to come back. We'll just have a really good look at that, get the scans, get a good assessment and see where that sits.

"It's fingers crossed for Steve, hoping everything is OK."

Questioned if vice-captain Jack Viney is carrying an injury, Goodwin said he was unaware of anything limiting his star midfielder.

Melbourne are scheduled to face Port Adelaide next Saturday in what shapes as a game that could end their 2024 campaign, with Goodwin's side potentially slipping to 12 points off eighth spot with three weeks to go.

The game against the Power will be followed by matches against fellow finals hopefuls Gold Coast and Collingwood in the last fortnight of the home and away season.
