With Lachie Hunter nestling into his new home at Gosch's Paddock, fitted in red and blue, Melbourne have opened up on their decision to recruit the 27-year-old.

Tim Lamb, head of list management, expressed his gratitude in acquiring the premiership Dogs' services alongside fellow Western Bulldogs teammate Josh Schache on deadline day of the trade period.

"We wanted to add a real good ball user, decision maker and runner" Lamb told 9News Melbourne.

"He has extremely high footy IQ, loves the game understands it... is a bit of an on-field coach," Lamb continued.

Admittedly, Lamb subscribed to the view their connection inside 50 was a key area where improvement was needed, suggesting the winger can play an important part in bridging that gap.

The Dees still see life in Hunters' ability to compete at the highest level despite an injury interrupted 2022 season at the Kennel, appearing in nine games with ankle issues and personal reasons impacting his year.

Winding the clock back four years ago, Hunter landed a Charles Sutton Medal winning year, claiming the best and fairest in 2018, efforts the Melbourne Football Club and fans alike are hoping for a repeat of.
