Melbourne utility James Harmes has signed on with the club until the end of 2024.

Originally contracted until the end of next season, the 24-year old added a further four years to his deal.

The tough nut is coming off a career-best season, averaging 24.5 disposals, 4.4 clearances and 5.1 tackles from his 22 games.

Harmes was thrilled to commit his future to the Demons.

โ€œIt took a little while, but we got there in the end โ€“ both parties are happy,โ€ Harmes told Melbourne Media.

โ€œIโ€™ve got a lot of faith in Goody (Simon Goodwin) and my teammates around me, so it was a pretty easy decision for me.

โ€œI grew up a Melbourne supporter too, so to sign a long-term deal โ€“ Iโ€™m just really excited and canโ€™t wait to get stuck into the year.โ€

Able to play in a variety of roles, Harmes is keen to take his game to new heights in 2020.

โ€œIโ€™ll probably try and lead the boys a bit more [next year],โ€ Harmes said.

โ€œIโ€™m 24, so itโ€™s time to start bringing some of the young guys along with me.

โ€œIโ€™m not too sure where Iโ€™ll play โ€“ I might play a bit of half back, a bit of midfield. [I just want] to keep improving and enjoying my footy.โ€

Melbourne general manager of football operations Josh Mahoney was excited by the development of Harmes and what the future holds for him.

โ€œWeโ€™re really pleased that James has agreed to a new extension with the club,โ€ he told Melbourne Media.

โ€œWeโ€™ve seen significant development from him, particularly over the past two seasons, which is an example of his hard work ethic.

โ€œJames has become an integral part of the team and gives us great versatility in the number of roles he can play.

โ€œWeโ€™re looking forward to him building on this in the years to come.โ€
