Montagna reveals his toughest opponents across his career

St Kilda champion Leigh Montagna has spoken about the toughest opposition players he ever had to play on during his AFL career.

Montagna played 287 games for the Saints from 2002-2017, and was one of their stars during that entire period.

He played against a number of the game's greats, although he narrowed down his list for a chat with journalist Jay Clark on Triple M show Dead Set Legends.

Montagna listed some players who he had the wood over or notorious taggers who didn't trouble him to much, but he labelled the following four players as the toughest guys he came up against through his career.

Liam Picken (Western Bulldogs)

"He was so disciplined, so focused and physical. He would have been the hardest opponent that I would have played on when I used to get tagged."

Jason Akermanis (Brisbane)

"I played on Jason Akermanis one day up at the Gabba, and that was a nightmare. He was just so quick and powerful, I thought I was doing well once I was corralling him on the boundary on his left foot and it was 55m out and he just kicked the goal on the boundary. He was impossible to stop."

Daniel Kerr (West Coast)

"I got a tagging role on Daniel Kerr one day, and could he throw me around like a rag doll. Kerr was impossible to tackle, and at his peak when he was flying in that West Coast team, he was so fast, so fit and so strong, he was impossible to play on."

Corey Enright (Geelong)

"Predominantly at St Kilda I played a high half forward role, and Corey Enright was the half back and we were always the match-up for one another. It was a great battle, he was trying to nullify my influence and play on me, and at the same time I'd be very conscious of Corey Enright. They were the best duels I had in my career, with Corey Enright."
