The North Melbourne Kangaroos are reportedly set to launch discussions over a potential trade for veteran Melbourne Demons' star Jack Viney.

The versatile midfielder, now 30 years of age, has been with the Demons since the start of his career in 2013 and has more than 200 games to his name, having also played in the club's 2021 AFL premiership campaign.

He is contracted with the Demons until at least the end of the 2025 season, but Channel 9s Tom Morris said North Melbourne are set to attempt to acquire Viney during this year's trade period.

"Todd Viney, who is Alastair Clarkson's [North Melbourne head coach] right hand man has removed himself from any of these discussions to remove the obvious conflict of interest, but what I can tell you is that North Melbourne have expressed interest in former Melbourne captain, best and fairest, and premiership player Jack Viney," Morris said.

It's understood the Demons will have little interest in letting Viney go, and in fact, would be more likely to attempt to re-sign the veteran who could retire as a one-club player if he does just that, having been taken at Pick 26 by the club in the 2012 National Draft.

Morris hinted however that the Roos' early approach for Viney speaks volumes of what they will attempt to accomplish in this year's trade period.

"Now Viney is contracted until the end of 2025 and Melbourne sees him playing on beyond that, so there is no hint they would even accept a trade," Morris added on the star's future.

"The Roos' approach, even though it's early days, speaks to the clubs approach to bring in senior bodies."

Clarkson's side currently sit in 17th spot on the AFL table, just four points clear of the Richmond Tigers heading into this weekend's fixtures, with the club needing a busy trade period to turn around what has been a horrendous season, following another 17th placed finish last year.
