Uber could be bringing new technology to stadiums in Victoria, with the rideshare company set to launch a new service to bring food and drink to fans at their seats.
The on-demand service will only be activated when patrons are inside the stadium, revolutionising the way that fans enjoy hospitality at live sporting events.
The technology is already implemented in the US at baseball games, however, Melbourne is being earmarked as a test dummy for the service, creating excitement over the potential of the system.
Head of partnership marketing for Uber Eats, Molly Spychalski, spoke to The Herald Sun about what the new service might mean for fans.
“Bringing it to Australia would be so incredibly special,” Spychalski said.
“We have very advanced conversations actually happening right now (with stadiums in Melbourne).
“The sporting capital of the world, if you will, is the place where we’d really love to bring the technology to first.
“It’s us coming together with a partner … To get you your hot pies, get you your cold drinks and get you on your way so you can be there for your team.”
Fans would ideally order from an app off a menu from bars and restaurants around the stadium, then designate a meeting spot to meet with a courier to collect their order.
It isn't just sporting events that the service will be restricted to, with festivals and other large-scale occasions also set to receive the new technology.
Considering the shortage of staff many hospitality organisations are experiencing as of current, it's unclear who exactly will act as couriers with arrangments set to differ from stadium to stadium.
It's also unclear how the service will operate in large crowds, with the capacity of grounds such as the MCG holding just over 100,000 people, possibly making it difficult for fans to receive their orders in a timely manner or to even order at all.
