West Coast defender Josh Rotham, who is currently out of contract, may be staying in Perth despite attracting interest from other clubs, including Essendon.

Channel 7's Ryan Daniels reported that, despite considerable interest, there is now a “growing possibility” that Rotham will remain with the Eagles.

The 26-year-old West Perth product has played 72 games for the Eagles since being drafted at pick 37 in 2016.

Known for his defensive skill and versatility, Rotham has played 13 games in each of his past three seasons, with a career-high 19 games in 2021.

He was also awarded the Eagles' ‘Emerging Talent' award in 2020 and won the Grand Final sprint in 2021, raising funds for charity.

Earlier in the season, it seemed Rotham's future at the Eagles was uncertain. Essendon emerged as a potential new home, with reports from AFL Media's Callum Twomey indicating that the Bombers were keen to bring Rotham on board as an unrestricted free agent.

The potential move would add depth to Essendon's backline, particularly with defender Jayden Laverde's future with the Bombers uncertain.

With the Eagles also rumoured to be targeting Port Adelaide defender Tom Clurey ahead of the free agency opening, Rotham's retention would further solidify the Eagles' backline as they look to rebuild after years of bottom-dwelling.

If Rotham does sign a new contract with West Coast, it would spell the end of a potential move to the eastern states for the defender, who has spent eight seasons in the Eagles' royal blue and gold.

With free agents still acquirable, clubs like Essendon may continue their push, or shift their focus to other defensive options to support Ben McKay and company.
