Out of form Melbourne forward Sam Weideman could be sent to the VFL to recapture form after a frustrating start to the season.

Weideman, who kicked three goals in a best on ground performance against Geelong in last year's elimination final, has struggled with expectations this campaign and has only kicked five goals in six games.

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin in his Wednesday press conference said a decision will be made in the best interest of Weideman's development.

"That's the decision we'll have to make, where he's best placed to continue his development. Those conversations we'll continue to have at match committee, and we obviously engage Sam in those discussions as well," Goodwin said on Wednesday.

Should the 21-year-old remain in the senior team, he will be joined by Tom McDonald who Goodwin confirmed will return to the forward line after playing down back against Richmond on ANZAC Day eve.
