A pair of strikes have marred Round 8 of the SANFL season, with an ex-Sydney Swans defender and a former Saint both receiving three-game suspensions by the league's Match Review Panel.

Norwood star and former Swan Matt Ling has been charged with striking after making intentional high contact on Woodville-West Torrens player Zac Buck in Sunday's game at Norwood Oval.

The first-term incident came away from the ball as the Eagles slotted an early major, with Ling seen swinging his left arm and making contact with Buck's head with his hand.

The strike instantly earned the ire of Woodville-West Torrens players and led to a melee as Buck was seen lying on the ground holding his jaw.

The SANFL's MRP has graded Ling's actions as intentional conduct, high impact and high contact, with the 25-year-old now facing a three-game suspension.

An accepted ban would see Ling ruled out of upcoming games against Sturt, Port Adelaide and South Adelaide.

Ling was seen as a live chance to earn an AFL lifeline through last week's Mid-Season Draft but was not selected. He played four games for Sydney during his time in the top flight, having joined the Swans via the 2017 National Draft before being delisted in 2021.

Former St Kilda backman Oscar Clavarino is facing a similar fate to Ling after being charged by the SANFL's Match Review Panel for striking.

An incident during South Adelaide's game against North Adelaide sees Clavarino make high contact with Roosters player Sam Ramsay in the opening quarter.

As Ramsay is tackled to the ground, Clavarino's right forearm looks to make contact with his opponent's head.

The MRP has graded the strike as careless conduct, severe impact and high contact, resulting in a three-game suspension.

Clavarino can choose to challenge the ban, but if accepted would miss matches against Adelaide, Central District and Norwood.

The 197cm defender joined the Panthers at the end of 2021, having been delisted by St Kilda at the cessation of that season.

He played five games in the red, white and black - all in his final year at the club - after being drafted in 2017.

In other SANFL MRP findings, Glenelg star Max Proud has been offered a one-game ban for rough conduct on Central District's Mani Liddy.

The incident was graded as careless conduct, high contact and medium impact.
