The GWS Giants have reportedly shown interest in out-of-contract Essendon forward Jake Stringer, with discussions expected to unfold later in the AFL trade period.

According to AFL.com.au's Cal Twomey, the Giants are "exploring" their options around Stringer, though any deal would likely be a late-stage possibility.

Twomey discussed the potential link between Stringer and Giants' football boss Jason McCartney during an interview on Trade Radio. McCartney was the list manager at the Western Bulldogs when Stringer was initially drafted in 2012, creating a connection that could facilitate discussions between the player and the club.

โ€œThe Giants are exploring interest in Jake Stringer,โ€ Twomey said.

โ€œIt hasn't progressed far at this stage and would only be a late trade period option, potentially. But there is a link at the Giants with Jason McCartney.โ€

Despite the interest, several factors could influence GWS's pursuit of Stringer. Key Giants players, including Harry Perryman and James Peatling, may be on the move, creating potential openings for an experienced recruit with premiership experience like Stringer.

While Stringer still has one year remaining on his contract at Essendon, where he reportedly wants to stay, speculation has grown about his future at the club.

Twomey confirmed that Stringer had "told plenty of people he's played his last game for Essendon," although the forward recently trained with Bombers captain Zach Merrett, signalling that he is still considering his options.

Stringer is reportedly seeking a longer-term contract, which could make a move more appealing, but clubs have not yet prioritised him during this trade period, Collingwood documented to have cooled on their desire to lure the 30-year-old.

Essendon appears open to a trade if the opportunity arises, while Stringer has expressed a willingness to leave Victoria if necessary.

As discussions continue, Stringer's next move remains a point of intrigue in the AFL landscape, being a player with game-breaking abilities yet just a few clubs actively considering his services.

Whether the Giants or another club decides to secure the versatile forward's talents could be one of the key stories as the AFL trade period progresses.
