Multiple reports have indicated that West Coast premiership defender Tom Barrass is set to request a trade to Hawthorn on a long-term deal.

Barrass - who considered a move to Sydney last year - has also been in talks with fellow Victorian club, Western Bulldogs, in a bid to be closer to family.

However, complications will arise in getting a deal over the line given the 28-year-old is contracted at the Eagles until the end of 2027, with some deeming him a required player.

According to Sweeney's report, “the Eagles are expected to ask for hefty compensation should a deal be struck, such as multiple first-round selections”.

As it currently stands, Hawthorn's first pick in the 2024 National Draft is 11, given their shock rise to finals contention after leapfrogging Carlton in eighth spot.

If a move were to be made, it would be a reunion for Barrass and Hawks coach Sam Mitchell, who featured as an assistant at West Coast in 2018, as well as Adrian Hickmott.

The Hawks are also said to be leading the race for St Kilda's key defender and free agent Josh Battle.
