Brisbane premiership defender Brandon Starcevich has reportedly not engaged in contract talks with his club and is unlikely to do so until after the early stages of the 2025 season.

Starcevich played a crucial defensive role in the Lions' premiership-winning season, shutting down livewire small forwards throughout the year, notably restricting Tom Papley to just one goal and 10 disposals on grand final day.

The 2017 draftee played 21 games at the top flight last year and didn't miss a game after Round 13. Fellow 2017 draftees include Pick 1 Cameron Rayner and first-rounder Zac Bailey, who have each earned contract extensions beyond the close of this season.

According to AFL.com.au, Brisbane have been "proactive" in their attempts to negotiate a fresh deal, but Starcevich is in no rush to engage in the process as of yet.

Starcevich is out of contract at the end of the 2025 season, and given his upbringing in Western Australia, Fremantle and West Coast are expected to pursue the 25-year-old.

The Lions will also be aiming to lock away premiership forward Logan Morris, who burst onto the scene in his debut year but remains out of contract after 2025. Morris has attracted Victorian interest due to the Western Jets product's connection to the state.

Earlier this week, Kai Lohmann earned a two-year extension after his heroic grand final display, taking the 21-year-old through to 2027.

The Lions begin their 2025 campaign against Geelong at the Gabba on Thursday night in Opening Round.
