Promising Essendon defender Zach Reid could be sidelined for the remainder of the 2023 season after undergoing hamstring surgery on Tuesday.

After suffering a hamstring ailment at the VFL level in May, Reid was scheduled to return to VFL action recently, however, upon experiencing discomfort received scans.

Those scans revealed a reaggravation of the existing injury, with the Bombers subsequently sending Reid in for surgery, which may rule him out for the rest of the year.

Essendon GM of Performance Daniel McPherson detailed Reid's situation.

"Recent scans revealed a recurrence of the hamstring strain that he originally suffered a couple of months back," McPherson toldย EssendonFC.com.au.

"These specific types of hamstring injuries are notorious for re-injury, and despite Zach's conservative rehab program, he unfortunately reaggravated the hamstring injury, just ahead of his planned return to play.

"We will have more visibility on exactly what the recovery from surgery looks like in the next week or two, however, we will be taking a long-term view with Reidy given we see him as an important part of our future at Essendon."
