Gold Coast are set to ask the AFL for extra draft help if they're struggles continue this season, according to a report by The Herald Sun.

It is believed that if the Suns can't add to their three-win win tally in a meaningful way they will seek said compensation.

The league knocked back the expansion club's request for a priority pick last year and were instead given access to three state league players.

The Suns have not yet officially asked for help but club CEO and former AFL GM of Football  Mark Evans is expected to explore avenues to try and boost the side up the ladder.

The AFL could hand Gold Coast extra draft picks or continue giving them access to state league players.

Over the last four seasons the Suns have won four games (2015), six (2016), six (2017) and four (2018) and it could be time for the AFL to step in and provide meaningful concessions.

There is also speculation that out-of-contract Cats ruckman Zac Smith could return to the Suns to serve as Jarrod Witts' back up.

He is reportedly keen to return to the Gold Coast to live.
