The Bombers have begun early talks with Collingwood about a possible trade for Mason Cox, according to The Age's Sam McClure and Michael Gleeson.

With Essendon's star forward Joe Daniher last week requesting a trade to the Sydney Swans, the Bombers will be on the lookout for a new tall forward and ruck rotation.

Both clubs remain some distance apart when it comes to any deal that could be made.

The former American college basketballer is currently in Sydney and is returning to the States on Thursday morning.

This means if any trade can be made, Cox will have to do a medical tomorrow in Sydney or Melbourne.

Cox is on "significant money" and is contracted until the end of 2020 with a trigger for the 2021 season.

The Bombers will need to let go of some players if Cox is to be a Bomber next season, meaning the futures of Daniher and small forward Orazio Fantasia are now a vital piece to this possible trade.
