He's been identified as a talented midfielder and handy small forward, but the identification of a club for Sam Gray remains to be seen.
Port Adelaide had offered Gray a one-year deal on reduced money, which led to Gray seeking - but ultimately not receiving - offers in the recent player exchange period. This was despite initial interest in the South Australian 96-gamer from Carlton, St Kilda, North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs.
Gray will be 28 years old by the start of next season, whereas Port is aiming to repeat its 2018 draft success which landed Connor Rozee (with pick 5), Zak Butters (pick 12) and Xavier Duursma (18). They currently hold picks 12, 18 and 29 in the 2019 National Draft.
Sam Gray's 69 goals from the last three seasons and ability to play midfield are considerable assets in what could see him nominate for the preseason draft.
Should he exit Port's list, Gray will enter the draft as an uncontracted player and hope he's offered a lifeline. If Port delists him, he becomes a free agent which allows direct negotiation with any willing club.
He could also accept Port's offer to stay at Alberton in 2020.
The AFL preseason draft begins on Wednesday, November 27.
