Carlton defender Ciaran Byrne will not be returning to Australia from his homeland of Ireland, according to Sam McClure on AFL's Trade Radio.

It is understood that Byrne returned to Ireland following the end of Carlton's disappointing 2018 campaign to play in a grand final for his local Gaelic football club, but McClure has suggested that he will not be making a return for Carlton in 2019.

Byrne has been on Carlton's senior list for five years now but has managed just 22 games in a career ravaged by injury and poor form.

The Irish prospect showed signs of promise towards the end of this season, including a standout performance in Round 22 against the Bulldogs in which he amassed 22 disposals and six tackles off the half-back flank.

Before joining Carlton in 2013, Byrne had begun a successful career playing for Gaelic club Louth in Ireland.
