Brisbane is understood to be weighing up a move that could see retired GWS utility Daniel Lloyd join the club via this month's Mid-Season Draft.

Lloyd called time on his 101-game career with the Giants last year, and has since stepped into a development coaching role with the Lions to start his post-playing career.

The 32-year-old played 23 games in the orange and charcoal last season holding down a role in a side that finished one point shy of a grand final finish.

Lloyd kicked 12 goals and averaged 12.91 disposals and 3.04 tackles as a high-pressure role player under Adam Kingsley in 2023, with the Rookie Draft-recruited hard-nut calling time on his career last August before joining Brisbane.

Amid the Lions' injury woes - having lost Keidean Coleman, Lincoln McCarthy, Darcy Gardiner and Tom Doedee for the rest of the season - Lloyd has reportedly emerged as a potential Mid-Season Draft option for the Queensland club.

New Corpย has revealed Lions players have urged the club to consider Lloyd as a mid-year recruit given his experience and fitness fresh out of a top system.

The snag in the way for the Lions is that Lloyd retired, and was not delisted by GWS, and is also required to play at least three matches in one of the nation's top state leagues: WAFL, SANFL,ย TSLย orย VFL.

The Lions have just two VFL matches prior to the Mid-Season Draft on Wednesday, May 29.

The AFL has the power to give exemptions for hopeful draft nominees, which would likely be the avenue for the Lions to recruit Lloyd this month.

Brisbane have up to four list spots able to be filled at the Mid-Season Draft, and currently hold picks 4, 16, 19 and 21 for the intake.

With West Coast and St Kilda currently without a pathway to the draft order, the Lions sit fourth in the queue thanks to their disappointing start to the 2024 season.

The Lions are one of just two clubs with at least three open list spots, with Adelaide currently having a trio of vacancies after losing Patrick Parnell and Wayne Milera to long-term setbacks while Rory Sloane recently announced his immediate retirement.
