Retired Magpies utility Travis Varcoe has joined the Western Bulldogs as a development coach for the 2021 season.

The two-time premiership player called time on his career earlier this year after 230 games between the Cats and Magpies.

Varcoe will take on the development role while also being involved in the club's Reconciliation Action Plan and Western Bulldogs Community Foundation programs.

The 32-year-old expressed his excitement to join the Bulldogs and mentor No.1 draft pick Jamarra Ugle-Hagan in his first year at the Kennel.

โ€œIโ€™m rapt with this opportunity to join the Bulldogs in an exciting new role,โ€ Varcoe said, per the club's website.ย

โ€œAfter a long time in the game as a player, I believe I have plenty to offer in guiding the players and tapping into the experience Iโ€™ve developed, as well as working with Bevo and the other coaches.

โ€œWatching from afar, Iโ€™ve been impressed with the development of the Bulldogsโ€™ young playing list.ย  They have some great talent at their disposal, and Iโ€™m excited to play my part as they continue their growth.

โ€œIโ€™m especially looking forward to working with Jamarra, and getting involved in the Clubโ€™s Indigenous and community programming.ย  I know their work in that space is genuine, and I believe I can strengthen that even further.โ€

Bulldogs' head of football Chris Grant lauded Varcoe's wealth of experience and the pending impact he will have at Whitten Oval.

โ€œWeโ€™re thrilled to have someone of Travisโ€™ experience and standing in the game as a new member of our coaching team,โ€ Grant said.

โ€œTravis brings so many strong qualities to the role which will benefit our players, as well as the other coaches.

โ€œTo be able to combine the football aspect of his role with the incredible work the Club is doing in the Indigenous space and in the community, is something which will benefit us greatly.โ€

Varcoe replaces Jordan Russell, who has moved to North Melbourne ahead of the 2021 season.
