The 2023 AFL Trade Period is just weeks away, with clubs ramping up their plans to settle their lists for next season.

The past week has seen some big calls made in the free agency space, while some surprising trade moves have been floated.

Here's a weekly wrap-up on all the latest AFL trade news and rumours.

McKay chooses Bombers ahead of FA window

North Melbourne free agent Ben McKay is officially on his way out of Arden Street, with it now a matter of where the 25-year-old will land.

After several sides showed interest in the key defender, Essendon is said to be McKay's club of choosing ahead of the free-agent window.

A lucrative enough deal from the Bombers could see the Roos pocket band one compensation for McKay, which would come in the form of Pick 3.

Hawk set for Punt Road move after trade request

In a surprise trade move, Hawthorn forward Jacob Koschitzke is reportedly seeking a move to Richmond this off-season.

With opportunities at Hawthorn no guarantee, coupled with the Tigers needing a tall forward, Koschitzke is set for a switch to Punt Road.

It is understood that Koschitzke did have an offer on the table from the Hawks.

Magpies linked to Adelaide free agent

Collingwood reportedly view Crows defender Tom Doedee as a potential long-term replacement for veteran high-flyer Jeremy Howe.

Doedee is yet to make a call on his future as both Adelaide and Brisbane look to secure his signature, with Collingwood the latest club to join the chasing pack.

A move for Doedee is said to be a suitable fit for Collingwood's list plans as Howe nears the end of his career.

Tigers tall, GWS ruck on radar of rivals

Port Adelaide is understood to be showing some level of interest in Richmond ruckman Ivan Soldo.

The Power are set to gain Jordon Sweet from the Bulldogs this off-season, but with Scott Lycett and Sam Hayes still unsigned the SA club could also make a move for Soldo.

Port Adelaide's interest in the premiership Tiger comes as GWS ruckman Matt Flynn gains strong interest from West Coast.

Melbourne remove contracted tall from trade pool

Demons defender Adam Tomlinson has reportedly been pulled from the open market, with Melbourne now set to hold the fringe backman to his contract.

Tomlinson found opportunities hard to come by in 2023 before being a required asset late into the year, seeing the Demons inform the former Giant that he is a required player for next year.

Tomlinson was flagged as a player considering his future this year despite being contracted.

Crows latest chasing Suns forward

Adelaide has joined the race for Gold Coast tall Mabior Chol.

Chol has struggled to cement himself as a senior player this year after booting 44 goals in a breakout campaign in 2022, leading the emerging tall to consider his options.

The Crows are said to be among the club with an eye on the forward's situation alongside Hawthorn and Brisbane.

Port ruckman could head east despite extension offer

Off-contract Port Adelaide veteran Scott Lycett is said to be a potential trade option for Victorian clubs in need of ruck support for 2024.

The Power ruckman reportedly has an underwhelming offer on the table from the SA club, potentially leading to Lycett moving on elsewhere.

Port Adelaide is set to acquire Bulldogs ruckman Jordon Sweet this off-season.

Bulldogs eyeing St Kilda backman

Unsigned Saints defender Nick Coffield is reportedly on the radar of the Western Bulldogs as his future at Moorabbin remains up in the air.

Coffield has battled with injury over the past 18 months to last feature at AFL level at the end of the 2021 season.

With no contract signed with the Saints, Coffield has gained reported interest from the Bulldogs as a potential defensive addition.

Swans named as front-runner for Dees free agent

Melbourne midfielder James Jordon is expected to land with the Swans after alerting the Demons of his desire to explore the open market.

The Swans have been joined by Essendon, Gold Coast and St Kilda as clubs that have kept an eye on the fringe onballer, with the New South Wales side viewed as the front-runner for his services.

Jordon is eligible for free agency after being delisted by Melbourne in 2020.

Victorian clubs miss out on young Lion

Brisbane forward Kai Lohmann has turned down interest from Victorian sides to recommit to the Lions for a further two years.

Essendon, the Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn had all been previously linked to the second-year Lion.

Lohmann was joined by fellow 2021 first-round pick Darcy Wilmot in re-signing with Brisbane this week, with the latter now locked away until 2027.

Delisted Power ruckman gaining interest

The Bulldogs, Giants and Kangaroos have all been linked to cut Port Adelaide tall Brynn Teakle as the ruck market prepares to shift significantly.

Teakle was one of four Power players delisted by the club this week, with Nathan Barkla, Trent Dumont and Riley Bonner also not offered deals for 2024.

With the aforementioned three clubs set to see their own ruck stocks change this off-season, Teakle firms as a potential support option for those interested.

Cats standing firm on Ratugolea talks

Geelong is said to be open to opening up trade talks with another club if negotiations between the Cats and Power fail to reach an agreement on a trade for Esava Ratugolea.

The Cats highly rate their wantaway swingman and are said to be hopeful of securing a first-round pick in return for his services, a selection Port Adelaide doesn't have for 2023's count.

The South Australian side is also unable to trade their future first after parting with their earliest selections in recent years, leading to tense talks with the Cats for Ratugolea.

Who can Hawks move for after missing two targets?

Hawthorn have now missed out on defensive targets Esava Ratugolea and Ben McKay, leaving them to ponder whether to continue looking to add to their backline or potentially bide their time.

There are some formidable options Sam Mitchell could consider from the remaining off-contract pool, while some star options for 2024 could be better suited for the Hawks' rebuild.

Hawthorn will also have one of this year's leading backman land on their list through the draft as a father-son selection, giving the Waverley club much to think about.
