Three-time Richmond premiership captain Trent Cotchin will notch up game 300 on Saturday night against St Kilda, becoming the 102nd VFL/AFL player to reach the milestone.

Cotchin has had a decorated career to date, being captain of Richmond's three premierships between 2017-2020, an All-Australian, a 2012 Brownlow medallist, 2012 AFLCA Player of the Year and a three-time Jack Dyer medallist.

Chief Executive Brendon Gale thanked Cotchin for all he has done for the football club, flagged as one of the key figures in leading Richmond to success.

"He's been an incredible reflection and a representative of our club and we are just so lucky and so thankful to have him leading our club for so long," Gale said.

Cotchin will join close friends Shane Edwards and Jack Riewoldt in reaching the 300-game milestone for Richmond, expressing his gratitude to reach the rare milestone when speaking to reporters at Punt Road on Thursday.

"I've been lucky enough to play the game that I grew up loving and continue to love for 16 odd years," he said.

"I'm sure there'll be some emotions having the kids and Brooke at the top of the race. But I'm also a fierce competitor, and I'll be ready to go into battle against a team that's been amazing this year."

A family man, Cotchin said he has always strived to be a good human being, embracing the hubs in 2020 where his family shared 16 weeks with the Richmond Football Club.

"My absolute priority has always been my family, and it will always be my family. But the way that the Richmond Footy club has become sort of a wider part of that family is what's really special for me," Cotchin said.

The one key thing missing from Cotchin's celebrations will be ex-coach Damien Hardwick, who stepped down from the coaching position earlier in the season. Hardwick coached Richmond from 2010, being a part of 14 of Cotchin's 16 seasons at AFL level.

"Him not being here is bittersweet, just being in contact with him earlier in the week realised it was the right time for him and the right thing for him. I'm sure we'll share a moment at some stage over the next few days," Cotchin said.

"I'm very lucky with the people I do have here as well."

When asked about retirement, Cotchin dismissed the idea, saying that he's trying to live in the moment this season.

"I'm not putting a ceiling on anything... it's just about smelling the roses and really enjoying the moment... really just trying to celebrate what is right now."

Cotchin will play his 300th game against St Kilda at the MCG on Saturday night at 7:25pm (AEST).
