Out-of-contract Giant Tim Taranto is reportedly set to be a coveted figure for rival AFL clubs this season as the Victorian midfielder continues to define his role with Greater Western Sydney.

Taranto has rapidly developed into a prolific ball-winner across 100 games for the Giants, averaging 23.19 disposals, 5.39 tackles, 4.02 clearances and 9.44 contested possessions per game.

Despite his elite abilities in the engine room, Taranto has been made to share his time between the midfield and forward line.

The Giants' star-studded midfield ensemble and constant rotations could tempt Taranto to assess options elsewhere, with circling clubs potentially able to offer greater opportunities in their own midfield pack.

Speaking on SEN, AFL.com.au's Cal Twomey revealed that clubs are set to "come very hard" for Taranto's services should he remain unsigned for 2023, with his role in the Giants' system potentially playing a part.

“The one to watch at the Giants is Tim Taranto, who is out of contract this year,” Twomey said.

“Clubs will come very hard for Tim Taranto.

“He’s a Victorian boy of course, he loves Sydney, he’s a heart and soul player up there, just played his 100th game, but there’s no doubt that with potential full-time midfield roles available elsewhere, what offer or opportunity does that present in his mind?

“I think that’ll be an interesting one, depending on what role he plays this year, but that one will be one to follow in the coming months.”

St Kilda had been strongly tied to Taranto two years ago when the Sandringham Dragons product was last off-contract.

After re-signing with the Giants, Taranto's manager Matt Bain had refuted speculation surrounding his client that suggested the midfield bull could depart for his home state.

The Giants have been able to lock away star midfielders Jacob Hopper, Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio to new deals in recent years, which may place some strain on their salary cap planning for 2023 and beyond.

Bobby Hill, Isaac Cumming, Xavier O'Halloran, Callan Ward, Adam Kennedy and Tanner Bruhn are among those that join Taranto in being yet to recommit for next season.

Among their extensive list of unsigned names, Kennedy, Jarrod Brander, Matt de Boer, Lachlan Keefe, Zach Sproule and Jacob Wehr are eligible for free agency.
