The St Kilda Saints reportedly "could not be more keen" to lure GWS gun Finn Callaghan to Moorabbin, with the 21-year-old's season only just coming to an end over the weekend.
Taken with Pick 3 in the 2021 National Draft to the Giants, Callaghan is gradually evolving into a ball-winning machine with a big frame and silky left foot, and is set to become one of the more sought-after commodities in the league next year when his contract expires.
He is apparently satisfied with his status at the Giants, but as a Bayside kid, may find the allure of returning home to be attractive enough for a change.
SEN reporter Sam Edmund shared the development on Wednesday ahead of preliminary final weekend, revealing what the Saints' hope to gain out of future free agency and trading periods.
"The Giants have him as an absolute priority... he does love Sydney," Edmund said on Whateley.
"But the Saints could not be more keen for this player.
"They're trying to set themselves up, the Saints, as a destination club... much like Geelong has done with some of the country kids in Victoria.
"Callaghan is a St Bede's kid, junior footballer at Mordialloc, drafted out of the Sandy Dragons, so right in the Saints' hitting zone.
"He'll be given a decision that he needs to make. The Saints will come and come hard."
Another highly touted Giant, Leek Aleer, also comes out of contract next season, and despite holding just 12 AFL games of experience, clubs are reportedly circling the 23-year-old.
Aleer looked like a superstar key back in the making at times this season, most notably in the Giants' stunning win over Geelong at GMHBA Stadium, where his courageous mark of the year contender halted the Cats' final surge and sealed the win for GWS.
Despite clear interest and without a key defensive vacancy for him to slot into at his current club, Aleer will wait to explore his options.
"The phone has rung off the hook for him this year," Edmund revealed. "He's backing himself to prove himself at his current club.
"He's not first choice, and he could easily go somewhere else, but he's staying at the Giants.
"Next year, a bit like Finn Callaghan will be very different if he's in this spot in 12 months time.
"One to watch next year but he's committed to staying put, and he's told them that in his exit meeting."
Toby Bedford is the last remaining player in a similar age bracket who comes out of contract next season.
As a breakout recruit from last season who has seemingly found his best footy at the Giants, a move looks unlikely.
