An improved trade offer from North Melbourne and a bid from the Demons have both fallen short in their pursuit of West Coast's highly sought-after selection of Pick 1.

The opening selection for next month's draft is in high demand given it will give the holder first access to top-rated prospect Harley Reid, with the Eagles wanting to receive a goliath trade package to even consider parting with the pick.

AFL clubs are able to trade draft selections until November 10 and then can continue to swap picks on draft night, with West Coast continuing to field offers for Pick 1.

The Eagles already turned down an offer from the Kangaroos during the recently passed trade period that would've seemed the Western Australian club pocket Picks 15, 18, 21 and an end-of-first-round selection for 2024 - a move that would've seen the Roos hold the opening three picks for the draft.

North Melbourne currently hold Picks 2, 3, 15, 17, 18, 57 and 82 for the 2023 AFL Draft and have now upped their offer, including their own opening selection in a move for Pick 1.

According toย AFL.com.au'sย Cal Twomey, Picks 2 and two of the Roos' picks in the teens were packaged for Picks 1 and 23, which the Eagles are said to have declined.

Melbourne have also made a move for Pick 1, offering Picks 6, 11, 42 and their 2024 first-round pick, which was also shut down by West Coast.

"North Melbourne's offer that we reported in the trade period saw them offering four late first-round picks for Pick 1, another offer has been floated from North," Twomey toldย Gettableย on Wednesday.

"That involves Pick 2 and two of their picks in the teens for Picks 1 and 23 coming back to them from the Eagles.

"Now that's not got anywhere from the Eagles' perspective in terms of those trade discussions, but it has been floated there for them.

"Also Melbourne has put forward an offer for Pick 1 too. Picks 6, 11, a future first-round pick and Pick 42. That also hasn't gone anywhere, but it does show the interest in the selection.

"Those two offers we can reveal. They've stepped up their play, North Melbourne, by including one of their top two picks."

The Roos can up their offer given they hold six combined first-round picks for this year and next, with any move for Pick 1 likely to involve the Eagles attaining Pick 2 in exchange.

West Coast are seen likely to carry Pick 1 through to the draft, with the Roos perhaps the only club that could satisfy the Eagles given their strong draft hand.

The 2023 National Draft will commence on Monday, November 20 and will run for two nights.
