Former St Kilda and Fremantle coach Ross Lyon believes Dockers star Michael Walters could become just the third indigenous coach in the AFL behind league greats Graham 'Polly' Farmer and Barry Gale.

When asked who out of all the current players he coached would make the best senior coach, Lyon put forward Walter's name as the man for the job.

"I think Michael Walters could be the first Aboriginal senior coach, modern era," Lyon said on Channel Nine's Footy Classified.

"Football-smart, drives training, sees the game, turnaround story, family man.

"I think he can get it done."

Matthew Lloyd asked if coaching would be something Walters would like to do?

"Yeah, he's very passionate about it," Lyon added.

Walters debuted in 2009 and has played 152 games so far for the Dockers. In the last few years, he has become one of the key leaders at the club.
