The Supplemental Selection Period has come to a close, with 14 players earning contracts at AFL clubs for the year ahead.
A total of eight clubs have signed train-on players to their 2025 squads, with a further 14 SSP prospects also involved in the pre-season recruitment window.
Essendon and Fremantle made the two earliest signings, adding ex-Brisbane backman Jaxon Prior and former Geelong and Port Adelaide forward Quinton Narkle respectively.
The Bombers would double their recruitment count before the February 21 deadline with the acquisition of athletic Swan Districts forward Tom Edwards, whose four-goal haul in a practice match hitout against the Western Bulldogs rubber-stamped his success for an AFL list spot.
The Dockers also made a second SSP signing, securing Central District small forward Isaiah Dudley earlier this month following his impressive stint in Perth.
St Kilda secured the services of reigning Magarey Medal winner Harry Boyd, who had been training at Moorabbin before the new year following a career-best season at Norwood.
Southport's Ben Jepson was signed by the Suns following his own stellar season at the state league level, having earned VFL Team of the Year honours in his first year with the Sharks after moving north from Coburg.
Werribee gun Jack Henderson is another VFL talent to finally break through to the top level, however his SSP stint saw him plucked by Melbourne despite not training with the Demons.
The 2024 Norm Goss Medal winner had earned an invite by West Coast and would train with the Eagles for a week - featuring in the club's pre-season clash with Richmond - prior to Melbourne's late move for his services.
The Eagles did fill one of their two list vacancies though, adding ex-Gold Coast defender Sandy Brock after his impressive summer trial, which was capped off with a telling performance against the Tigers this week.
Local footballer Josh Lai won the race for the only contract up for grabs at Port Adelaide, with the teenager's stellar rise from a premiership-winning campaign with Victorian club Cheltenham seeing him secure a gig with the Power for the season ahead.
Carlton defender Matt Carroll also earned a career lifeline at Princes Park thanks to a successful SSP stint, with the Blues rookie initially delisted in October but handed the chance to earn back a contract.
The Blues also added ex-Port Adelaide and Geelong small forward ahead of the SSP deadline, with the 34-gamer landing at his third club in four years.
A host of players fresh out of the AFL fell short of earning reprieves via the SSP, with delisted Essendon defender Kaine Baldwin, cut Eagles flanker Coby Burgiel, departed Suns speedster Hewago Paul Oea and axed Carlton backman Sam Durdin each earning a chance to train at their respective clubs over the summer with no success.
Former St Kilda tall James Van Es joined Brock in training for a spot at the Eagles, while ex-Gold Coast ruckman Brayden Crossley was given a chance to prove his value with the Western Bulldogs.
Crossley was joined by fellow VFL star Dom Brew in pushing for the sole list spot at the Kennel, with North Melbourne captain Jack Watkins another from the VFL who was invited to train at a top flight club, getting a run with Port Adelaide up against Lai.
The Bombers also had VFL-listed stopper Will Hoare as an SSP option before Edwards' arrival from Western Australia, with the athletic defender able to continue his training stint at Tullamarine despite the change.
Norwood match-winner Baynen Lowe had a brief stint with Fremantle, with a serious shoulder injury ending his chance of breaking through to the AFL.
Carlton's other train-on prospects included former Hawthorn defender Denver Grainger-Barras and ex-Collingwood forward Liam McMahon, the latter starring for the Blues' VFL program last year.
Another ex-Hawk in Ethan Phillips and VFL Blue Will White were also considered for the last list spot at the Blues.
Following the recent ACL injuries to Jagga Smith and Andy Moniz-Wakefield, the AFL opted to extend the SSP for both Carlton and Melbourne, allowing White (Carlton) and Jai Culley (Melbourne) to be signed under unique circumstances.
Similarly at Adelaide, where ruckman Kieran Strachan selflessly stepped aside (and was placed on the inactive list) to allow the club to sign former Swan tall Lachlan McAndrew.
Having decided against filling list vacancies, West Coast and the Western Bulldogs will have spots free for this year's Mid-Season Draft instead.
The mid-year talent intake is traditionally scheduled for late May to early June, with clubs able to open list spots in the draft order by moving injured players to the inactive list or having players retire in the early periods of the season.
