A total of 14 AFL hopefuls are training across seven clubs this summer in the hopes of securing a list spot via the Supplemental Selection Period.

Former AFL-listed players and stars of state and local competitions have linked up with clubs since the SSP's opening, with three signings already made.

Essendon and Fremantle confirmed the acquisitions of former Brisbane defender Jaxon Prior and delisted Port Adelaide forward Quinton Narkle respectively in the early stages of the SSP back in November, while St Kilda signed Magarey Medal-winning Norwood ruckman Harry Boyd in mid-January.

Across the rest of the competition, a total of eight list spots are currently vacant, with Carlton having two openings while Port Adelaide, Essendon, Gold Coast, West Coast, Fremantle and the Western Bulldogs each have one.

The Dockers recently made a list spot free following the long-term setback to fringe tall Odin Jones, while the Blues could follow suit in the wake of Nic Newman's season-ending knee injury.

The Power are in a similar position with injured forward Todd Marshall, who is facing an extended period on the sidelines with an Achilles rupture.

In the meantime, Port Adelaide have North Melbourne VFL gun Jack Watkins and teenager Josh Lai - who has been invited out of Victoria's Southern Football Netball League - training for the sole vacancy at Alberton Oval.

Carlton have had former Hawthorn defender Denver Grainger-Barras, ex-Collingwood tall Liam McMahon and 2024-listed pair Sam Durdin and Matt Carroll training for the two list spots at the Blues.

Essendon too have invited recently delisted defender Kaine Baldwin back to Tullamarine for another chance at securing a list spot, with the tall backman having been up against VFL stopper Will Hoare at training over the past month.

The Bombers are set to welcome athletic Swan Districts forward Tom Edwards for an SSP stint, meaning one of Baldwin or Hoare could make way - with AFL clubs permitted two train-on prospects per list vacancy.

Given Hoare is part of the club's VFL program, he could continue training with the senior squad and allow both Baldwin and Edwards to feature in Brad Scott's program.

The Western Bulldogs have invited reigning J.J. Liston Trophy winner Dom Brew to push for a list spot at the Kennel, with the hard-nosed midfielder linking back up with the Dogs despite a quad injury hampering his training block late last year.

West Coast have altered their SSP list over the summer, with former St Kilda defender James Van Es getting an opportunity since the new year after former Eagle Cody Burgiel's training run was brought to an end.

Ex-Gold Coast defender Sandy Brock is also training for a list spot alongside Van Es as he pushes to keep his AFL career alive.

Across at Fremantle, the Dockers have kept Central Districts talent Isaiah Dudley as part of their program, with the small forward the only remaining SSP prospect at Cockburn after Norwood star Baynen Lowe suffered a long-term shoulder injury during his stint in purple.

Gold Coast too have halved their number of train-on options, with former Sun Paul Hewago Oea not having his chance extended into 2025, leaving Southport defender Ben Jepson left alone to push for the one list spot at Carrara.

Adelaide have not listed Sydney ruckman Lachie McAndrew as an SSP option, however he has been called on by the Crows as a potential replacement for injured tall Kieran Strachan. It is understood if McAndrew is unsuccessful at West Lakes he will play out the coming SANFL season with Norwood.

The SSP will run until February 21, with clubs able to hold over list spots for the 2025 Mid-Season Draft.
