Star Melbourne Demons defender Steven May has suffered from an injury setback that will sideline him for the next week.

May, 27, who had an uninterrupted pre-season leading up until Christmas, had surgery earlier this year to remove a cyst.

After returning to full training at the Demons pre-season camp in Maroochydore, May has had issues with the healing of the wound.

Despite the injury setback Melbourne general manager of football operations Josh Mahoney told Melbourne Media that he is confident May will be ready for Round 1.

"Unfortunately Steven had some fluid build-up within the existing wound last week which was causing him some discomfort". "We expect Steven to be back up and running next week and we're confident this is only a minor hiccup".

This news comes after an injury-plagued 2019 where the former Gold Coast captain only played eight games in his first season at Melbourne, his lowest number since 2012.
