Star Hawk Tom Mitchell will have to contend with a sore right shoulder for the early rounds after aggravating an old injury.

However, the ball magnet isn't expected to to miss any games.

The 2018 Brownlow medalist wore strapping on his shoulder during Hawthorn's 61-point loss to Geelong on Friday night and will continue to do so for the next few weeks.

Mitchell first felt soreness in his shoulder after training a few weeks ago and was placed under a no contact rule during the club's intra-squad hitouts before the season restart in round two.

The injury is on the same shoulder as the one Mitchell has surgery to repair his AC joint after the 2018 finals series.

Hawthorn football boss Graham Wright spoke about the injury with AFL.com.au and confirmed Mitchell will face Richmond on Thursday night.

"He's got a grumbly right shoulder that he aggravated a number of weeks ago," Wright said.

"He got through the game fine on Friday night and he appears to be fine and will play this week."

Fellow on-baller Jaeger O'Meara is likely to return from a facial fracture on Thursday night with a full return to training slated for Tuesday.

O'Meara's return couldn't come at a better time for the Hawks, being dominated 41-23 in the clearances against Geelong with coach Alastair Clarkson stating after the game his side was made to look "third to fourth-rate".
