The Hawks have pulled off a surprise signing that no one saw coming, with the expansion side landing North Melbourne star Aileen Gilroy ahead of the club's first season.
Gilroy had recently stated her intentions to stay at Arden Street, with the Irish born star recently telling the club she would recommit only weeks prior to the move, according to womens.aflw.
Despite allegedly already turning down an offer from Hawthorn in preference of the Roos, a further push from the Hawks seemingly convinced the star to make the switch in an unexpected turn of events.
The Hawks apparently lodged the paperwork for the move right before the 2pm AEST expansion signing period deadline, with the club looking to pick up a few marquee AFLW players for their inaugural season.
The news of the move comes soon after North announced the signing of another two Irish players, with Meath's Vikki Wall and Cork's Erika O'Shea two Gaelic stars ready to join the team at the start of the new season.
Gilroy had played 28 games for the Kangaroos, averaging 12 disposals. The 29-year-old finished seventh in the Roo's best and fairest count.
Meanwhile, Collingwood have confirmed forward Aliesha Newman has signed with expansion club Sydney for the upcoming campaign.
“We understand and support ‘Newy’s’ decision to explore her options elsewhere,” Magpies head of women's football Jess Burger said.
“’Newy’ is a much-loved member of our program and has not only been a valued member of the team but has also made a significant contribution in the club’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community programs.
“We thank her for her time with us and wish her the best with her new chapter at the Swans.”
Newman played 14 games in black and white after arriving in 2020 from Melbourne.
The Swans have also swooped on North Melbourne tall Lexi Hamilton and Academy product Kiara Beesley for the August season.
