State League Wrap: Shark boots 10 goals, Tigers young gun impresses

A look into who impressed in the VFL and all the stars of the State game between the SANFL and WAFL ahead of the Mid-Season Draft.

SANFL

The competition's best clashed with the WAFL in a State Game curtain-raiser to the Port Adelaide vs Western Bulldogs fixture on Saturday.

Former Richmond duo Tyson Stengle and Liam McBean booted three goals each for the South Australians, who were comfortable victors in the 130-77 win.

Glenelg's Luke Reynolds led all the scorers for the SANFL with four of his own, with skipper Jack Hayes also kicking three.

Crows midfielder Bryce Gibbs also led the charge for the SANFL, amassing 31 touches, while former Adelaide player and Woodville-West Torrens star Riley Knight managed 30 touches.

Former Eagle Luke Partington put in another strong display ahead of the AFL Mid-Season Draft, collecting 25 touches and booting two goals.

WAFL

In what was a difficult outing for the men from the West, a few players stood strong in the clash.

Claremont star Jye Bolton was once again a standout in representing the WAFL, taking out his fourth Simpson Medal.

Tyler Keitel booted four majors for the West Australians, with former Saints livewire Matthew Parker the only other multiple goal-scorer.

Lachlan Delahunty and Cameron Eardley were also prominent for the WAFL, collecting 26 and 24 touches respectively.

VFL

In the reserves QClash, senior Lion Cam Ellis-Yolmen was stellar in his first game of the season, collecting 39 possessions, seven marks and seven tackles.

AFL hopefuls Bruce Reville and Will Tasker led the scorers with five goals, while Tom Joyce was also dominant in the Lions' 10-goal victory, amassing 34 disposals.

Suns duo Brayden Fiorini and Will Brodie led their side in the loss, with the pair collecting 32 and 26 touches respectively.

AFL-listed duo Joel Jeffrey (three goals) and Alex Sexton (two) impacted the scoreboard.

Remaining in Queensland, Southport enjoyed a 106-point victory away to Aspley, with Mitch Johnson booting 10 goals in what was a dominant outing for the Sharks forward.

Brayden Crossley also gave a helping hand with five goals, while VFL goal-kicking leader Matt Hammelmann was the only multiple goal-scorer for the Hornets.

Formers Sun Jesse Joyce led the possessions-getters for the evening with 30 touches, while former ex-Lion Corey Lyons was prominent for Aspley with 27 touches.

Casey enjoyed a one-point win over Geelong at Casey Fields, with AFL-listed forward Mitch Brown booting four goals against his old side.

Toby Bedford and Majak Daw also managed majors in the low-scoring affair, while Josh Jenkins' impressive season in the hoops continued, with the former Crow booting three of his own.

Fringe Cat Charlie Constable led the disposals column with 26, while Tom Sparrow (25) and Neville Jetta (22) were the only other players to break the 20-touches barrier.

The win places Casey atop the VFL ladder after four games, just edging out Footscray, Williamstown and Southport on percentage.

Footscray enjoyed a bye over the weekend, while the Seagulls suffered their first loss from their opening five matches in their clash with Sandringham.

Luke Dunstan was once again in the Zebras best after recording 36 touches, 10 marks and two goals. Mason Wood was also dominant, booting two of his own goals and collecting the ball on 29 occasions.

Saints veteran Jarryn Geary had a successful return to football, collecting 18 touches.

Nick Ebinger was impressive for Williamstown, booting four goals, while Luke Meadows' strong season continued with 21 disposals, eight marks, six tackles and a goal.

Coburg and Richmond returned to their winning ways, with wins over Port Melbourne and the UWS Giants respectively.

Young forward Callum Coleman-Jones staked his claim for a spot in the Tigers' AFL side, booting five goals in Richmond's emphatic 97-point win.

Sydney claimed the four points over Collingwood, while Box Hill and Essendon also enjoyed Round 5 victories.

Patrick Ambrose booted six goals against Frankston for the Bombers, while Dolphins midfielder Nathan Freeman collected another 42 touches in the 15-point loss.
