Steven a “key part” of Saints’ future

Alan Richardson was quick to end any speculation revolving around reports that Geelong were chasing a trade involving St Kilda star, Jack Steven.

Despite plans to pursue an "aggressive" trade period, and what has been described as a "fiery" end of season meeting between player and coach, Richardson was clear in his wish to retain the contracted Steven, a three time best and fairest winner for the Saints.

"Jack is a key part of what we're doing," Richardson told Fox Footy's AFL 360.

"We’re really comfortable that Jack’s not only staying with us but is a really important part of driving what we’re doing."

Geelong are looking to acquire additional talent after their disappointing finals elimination on Friday, with talented Dogs midfielder, Luke Dahlhaus, a reported target.

Even if the reports of Geelong targeting Steven were true, it would stretch the resources of the Cats, who must use a first-round pick in the 2018 and 2019 national drafts after dealing away their first-round picks in the two previous seasons.

After a decade at the club, it appears that St Kilda are keen to retain Steven, one of their few consistent players in a disastrous four-win 2018 season.
