Gold Coast co-captain Steven May is reportedly set to re-sign with the Suns in the next month and commit his future to the club long-term.

Sam McClure reported the news on SEN Breakfast on Tuesday morning, and said the Suns are hopeful May can put pen to paper before the season is out.

โ€œAs it stands right now the Gold Coast Suns are very confident that Steven May will re-sign in the next few weeks,โ€ McClure toldย SEN Breakfast.

Hawthorn are one of the clubs who are keen on May's services should he choose to leave the Suns, but given he isn't a free agent despite being out of contract at the end of the season, McClure said it would be very hard for the Hawks to organise a suitable trade.

โ€œI keep reading that somehow Hawthorn are linked to Steven May. But Iโ€™m not sure how they can get him,โ€ McClure said.

โ€œHeโ€™s coming into the end of his seventh year. Heโ€™s not a free agent, so they will have to trade for him.

โ€œTheyโ€™ve got nothing to trade and theyโ€™ve got one pick inside 40 Hawthorn. Iโ€™m not sure how on earth that deal can get done.โ€

SEN co-host Garry Lyon can understand the perceived frustration from Gold Coast officials, after appointing May as a co-captain alongside Tom Lynch at the beginning of the season.

โ€œThe disappointment from Gold Coastโ€™s point of view is that they sat him down as I understand it and said weโ€™ve got to name a captain, where is your head and at? He said itโ€™s here (at Gold Coast),โ€ Lyon added.

โ€œSo theyโ€™ve co-captained him and Tom Lynch, to the point that where he was highly critical apparently of Jaeger Oโ€™Meara and his decision to move back, and now we see the situation where heโ€™s uncertain about his future.โ€
