Gold Coast co-captain Steven May is reportedly set to re-sign with the Suns in the next month and commit his future to the club long-term.
Sam McClure reported the news on SEN Breakfast on Tuesday morning, and said the Suns are hopeful May can put pen to paper before the season is out.
“As it stands right now the Gold Coast Suns are very confident that Steven May will re-sign in the next few weeks,” McClure told SEN Breakfast.
Hawthorn are one of the clubs who are keen on May's services should he choose to leave the Suns, but given he isn't a free agent despite being out of contract at the end of the season, McClure said it would be very hard for the Hawks to organise a suitable trade.
“I keep reading that somehow Hawthorn are linked to Steven May. But I’m not sure how they can get him,” McClure said.
“He’s coming into the end of his seventh year. He’s not a free agent, so they will have to trade for him.
“They’ve got nothing to trade and they’ve got one pick inside 40 Hawthorn. I’m not sure how on earth that deal can get done.”
SEN co-host Garry Lyon can understand the perceived frustration from Gold Coast officials, after appointing May as a co-captain alongside Tom Lynch at the beginning of the season.
“The disappointment from Gold Coast’s point of view is that they sat him down as I understand it and said we’ve got to name a captain, where is your head and at? He said it’s here (at Gold Coast),” Lyon added.
“So they’ve co-captained him and Tom Lynch, to the point that where he was highly critical apparently of Jaeger O’Meara and his decision to move back, and now we see the situation where he’s uncertain about his future.”
